Not All Jade Stones are Created Equal

When talking about jade, there are actually two varieties - jadeite and nephrite. Jadeite is from Burma and is considered the more valuable of the two. But nephrite, which comes from western China, has long been in use. In fact, older Chinese nephrite jade pieces are highly valuable and command huge amounts at auction. Jewelry, religious art, and artwork using jade are valuable in China. It is often said that diamonds are to the West what jade is to the East.

In ancient times, it was actually used for weapons and tools because of its durability, and only later was it used as ornaments and other carvings.

Nephrite

Nephrite is rounded and resembles a kidney. It also comes from the Latin words lapis nephriticus, meaning “stone of the kidneys” because of the belief that it can heal kidneys and loins.

Nephrite jade comes in varying shades of green, as well as translucent white to pale yellow, which is often referred to as “mutton fat” jade. Compared to jadeite, it is slightly softer, nephrite is actually tougher because of its denser composition.

Nephrite jade is made of calcium, magnesium and iron-rich minerals, so it is pure, and without any harmful mineral impurities.
